Introducing the Substrate: The System of Record for Marketing Performance
The Substrate turns fragmented marketing data into trusted, durable context for measurement, planning, optimization, and AI.
by Marketing Evolution

Today, Marketing Evolution announced the broad availability of the Substrate, the System of Record for Marketing Performance.
Marketing has systems of record for customers, content, campaigns, and transactions. It has never had one for performance.
Instead, performance data sits across disconnected platforms and teams. Definitions conflict. Customer journeys have gaps. Measurement methods produce different answers from the same activity. Privacy changes reduce visibility further, while AI raises the cost of working from incomplete or inconsistent data.
Data warehouses preserve those inconsistencies; models and agents reason over whatever they are given. The Substrate is the layer between them—a persistent, purpose-built marketing intelligence layer that gives organizations trusted context for understanding how marketing drives business outcomes.
How the Substrate creates trusted marketing performance context
The Substrate connects data from paid and owned channels, CRM systems, offline activity, and third-party sources. It standardizes the taxonomies, KPIs, definitions, and business logic that give the data meaning.
But connected data is not complete data. Privacy restrictions, walled gardens, and limited exposure data leave much of the customer journey unobserved.
Marketing Evolution’s proprietary Journey Reconstruction and Enriched Data technology fills those gaps. It reconstructs missing journeys and creates person-level marketing performance context without cookies or personally identifiable information. This extends person-level measurement to channels such as television, radio, and out-of-home, where exposure data is often limited.
What organizations can do with the Substrate
The Substrate supports measurement, simulation, planning, optimization, and AI-driven decision-making from the same performance context. Organizations can use it to:
Unify marketing mix modeling (MMM), multi-touch attribution (MTA), and incrementality
Simulate scenarios before committing budget
Continuously validate incoming data and preserve definitions and lineage
Build credible models with as little as three months of historical data, rather than the years traditionally associated with MMM
Built for any model, agent, or application
Darwin is Marketing Evolution’s native intelligence application built on the Substrate. Teams use its conversational interface to investigate performance, explore scenarios, optimize investment, and monitor results as new data arrives.
The Substrate does not limit that intelligence to Darwin. Its open, model-agnostic architecture makes the same marketing context available to an organization’s own applications, models, and agents—including ChatGPT, Claude, and future AI systems.
Every system can work from the same KPIs, definitions, causal relationships, and business context. Organizations can change models and interfaces without rebuilding the intelligence beneath them. They retain that context as an asset that becomes more valuable over time.
Proven measurement science, now broadly available
The Substrate builds on more than 25 years of Marketing Evolution’s measurement science. Marketing Evolution first deployed its Journey Reconstruction and Enriched Data technology in 2020. The platform has operated in production through custom enterprise deployments since 2024.
Its methodology models how marketing changes the probability of customer behavior, supporting causal measurement and scenario simulation. In algorithm-level validation against synthetic ground-truth data, it achieved less than 1% parameter recovery error at panel sizes of 200 or more.
The Substrate also improves the work required to produce trusted intelligence. In one enterprise deployment, it detected and resolved data-quality issues and anomalies affecting 29% of the dataset, saved 240 hours of analyst time, and cut the reporting cycle from weeks to four days.
AI performance will depend on more than the model an organization chooses. It will depend on the quality, consistency, and continuity of the performance context that model can access.
The Substrate provides that context to marketers and to the models, agents, and applications they use—including Darwin.
The Substrate is available now.
Historical data requirements are based on standard marketing mix modeling practice. Parameter recovery results reflect algorithm-level validation against synthetic ground-truth data at a panel size of 200 or more.
